Popular Art of the Congo

"Struggling with war, violence, and political uncertainty, it is an extremely resource rich country with a population living in bitter poverty. (...) The paintings deal with pressing political issues, with social and economic inequalities. They are sarcastic, sometimes shocking in their unveiled directness. They reveal a life world of misery and uncertainties that finds few parallels in Western countries. (...) The paintings unmask the day-to-day fragility of life in Kinshasa."
Ruth Kutalek, Unit Ethnomedicine and International Health of the University Vienna in "Congolese paintings on suffering, violence and trauma". In: Sjaak van der Gest & Marian Tinkink: Theory and Action - Essays for an anthropologist. Uitgeverij AMB, USB 97890 79700 073, Amsterdam 2009.
